For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

Recruitment and Career Development
Resources from the web site of Well House Consultants on the subject of Recruitment and Career Development. We provide open source training course and business hotel accommodation in Melksham, Wiltshire, England

Background
We're a training company, and so we meet a lot of technical people in the course of our work ... getting quite an insite into the recruitment and career development fields. We don't act as a recruitment agency in any way, as that would be against the interest of the companies who are paying us to train their current staff - but we are sometimes able to put you in touch with independent contractors who have come on our courses and paid for their own places, and it's then up to you and them to sort out whether you're right for each other.

3490How not to call when job seeking ...
How to lose any chance you may have when calling to ask about a job: * Call with the family in the room making plenty of noise. * Sound desparate - ask for "anything". * Don't give your name or introduce yourself. * Make it obvious you haven't researched the company you're calling. * Blurt out your request ...

3740Looking and Learning - even on Holiday
On holiday in midWales ... some glorious pictures and no content on Open Source, Technology, Hotel, Museum, Cream Teas, Campus, Rail ... or at least not very much of it. Early mornings, and we are indeed checking our email, ensuring that outstanding questions have been answered, and taking in the scene ...

3594Back to Uni
We're trainers so we should be (and we are) advocates of training courses. And that means attending appropriate training, as well as giving it. Those readers who've been on our courses may well have heard me talk about how I have traveled far and wide to learn from the people at the heart of Perl, ...

3440Research is exciting. But should routine be automated?
The first time you do something, it's research and exciting. The second time, it's development and it's fun. The third time, you're a technician and you get pleasure in making sure the job is done efficienctly. And the fourth time, you're just turning the handle and wondering how you can automate ...

2294Can you learn to program in 4 days?
"New to programming" on Monday Morning ... and understanding a program that reads and analyses a web access log file, reporting back on remote hosts that visited us and stayed for between one and five minutes by the end of Thursday. That's a good advert for Ruby - and a good advert for our Learning ...

"Why most training fails ..." ... a headline from a newsletter / newsfeed which comes in to me each morning. [article] And most of what the article says is true. 1963Best source to learn Java (or Perl or PHP or Python)

1967LinkedIn - Thrice Asked, and joined.
I admit it - I was something of a cynic when I got my first invite to join LinkedIn; I saw it as yet another idea / directory and felt that - although I should be networking - there's a limit to the number of profiles I can maintain, and to the amount of information I should put out there to fade, gently, ...

I've been cc'd into an argument on a forum (not our Opentalk) and I'm taking great care not to join in or read deeply into what looks like a feud between a couple of folks who, frankly, should agree to disagree. However, I did pick up: "Speaking for myself, I’ve never bothered Googling anyone ...

585Looking for Python staff
I'm often asked if I know any good Python programmers. And the next sentence is usually along the lines of "I'm looking to add Python programming resources to my team ...". This is an overview written in answer to an email. I'm publishing it via the Horse's Mouth as it might be useful to others. 116The next generation of programmer
Ten years ago, I was teaching languages like Shell Scripting and C, but the requirement faded. So now, I'm teaching languages ...
