For 2021 - online Python 3 training - see ((here)).

Our plans were to retire in summer 2020 and see the world, but Coronavirus has lead us into a lot of lockdown programming in Python 3 and PHP 7.
We can now offer tailored online training - small groups, real tutors - works really well for groups of 4 to 14 delegates. Anywhere in the world; course language English.

Please ask about private 'maintenance' training for Python 2, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, etc.

Recruitment and Career Development
Resources from the web site of Well House Consultants on the subject of Recruitment and Career Development. We provide open source training course and business hotel accommodation in Melksham, Wiltshire, England

We're a training company, and so we meet a lot of technical people in the course of our work ... getting quite an insite into the recruitment and career development fields. We don't act as a recruitment agency in any way, as that would be against the interest of the companies who are paying us to train their current staff - but we are sometimes able to put you in touch with independent contractors who have come on our courses and paid for their own places, and it's then up to you and them to sort out whether you're right for each other.

3490How not to call when job seeking ...
How to lose any chance you may have when calling to ask about a job: * Call with the family in the room making plenty of noise. * Sound desparate - ask for "anything". * Don't give your name or introduce yourself. * Make it obvious you haven't researched the company you're calling. * Blurt out your request ...
3740Looking and Learning - even on Holiday
On holiday in midWales ... some glorious pictures and no content on Open Source, Technology, Hotel, Museum, Cream Teas, Campus, Rail ... or at least not very much of it. Early mornings, and we are indeed checking our email, ensuring that outstanding questions have been answered, and taking in the scene ...
3594Back to Uni
We're trainers so we should be (and we are) advocates of training courses. And that means attending appropriate training, as well as giving it. Those readers who've been on our courses may well have heard me talk about how I have traveled far and wide to learn from the people at the heart of Perl, ...
3440Research is exciting. But should routine be automated?
The first time you do something, it's research and exciting. The second time, it's development and it's fun. The third time, you're a technician and you get pleasure in making sure the job is done efficienctly. And the fourth time, you're just turning the handle and wondering how you can automate ...
2294Can you learn to program in 4 days?
"New to programming" on Monday Morning ... and understanding a program that reads and analyses a web access log file, reporting back on remote hosts that visited us and stayed for between one and five minutes by the end of Thursday. That's a good advert for Ruby - and a good advert for our Learning ...
2255Past PHP delegates / others - coding help needed for next 3 months
To past delegates and other technical contacts ... I had a lunchtime meeting yesterday with a director who is working on a major PHP application and has urgent need of extra coding staff for a near-immediate start, with work lasting for just under 3 months. Opportunities exist for individual contact ...
2109Why most training fails ...
"Why most training fails ..." ... a headline from a newsletter / newsfeed which comes in to me each morning. [article] And most of what the article says is true. To quote from the article: "While these methods may get high marks from participants, research (ignored by many training professionals) shows ...
1963Best source to learn Java (or Perl or PHP or Python)
An impossible question - there is no best way - yet it's one that I'm asked from time to time. [["Hello. I'm doing a b.tech. My friends like ur site very much. Plz help us in Java programming - plz tell me about the best source to learn Java"]] So do I answer such questions, and if so, how? Firstly ...
1967LinkedIn - Thrice Asked, and joined.
I admit it - I was something of a cynic when I got my first invite to join LinkedIn; I saw it as yet another idea / directory and felt that - although I should be networking - there's a limit to the number of profiles I can maintain, and to the amount of information I should put out there to fade, gently, ...
849Staff Meeting
With Well House Consultants growing - just over a month now until we open Well House Manor, and lots happening on many fronts - we've instigated a monthly staff meeting. It's to ensure that everyone's in the picture as to what has been happening in all departments, and what will be happening in the ...
759Watch your Google profile
I've been cc'd into an argument on a forum (not our Opentalk) and I'm taking great care not to join in or read deeply into what looks like a feud between a couple of folks who, frankly, should agree to disagree. However, I did pick up: "Speaking for myself, I’ve never bothered Googling anyone ...
585Looking for Python staff
I'm often asked if I know any good Python programmers. And the next sentence is usually along the lines of "I'm looking to add Python programming resources to my team ...". I do know some excellent Python programmers. Some are people that I've met over years of being in the business, but most are trainees ...
587Job vacancy - double agent wanted
Seated in a beautiful Italian restaurant overlooking the Pacific in San Diego, California, the Vice President of Zingo [company name changed] suggested that I might like to become a double agent - a spy for his California based arm of Zingo in the Basingstoke office, where I was in the role of European ...
751Want to be a technical trainer in the UK?
This is an overview written in answer to an email. I'm publishing it via the Horse's Mouth as it might be useful to others. Please bear in mind there are a lot of subjects that I have NOT touched on here such as the need to obtain an appropriate visa if, like my correspondent, you're not an EU citizen. Typically, ...
116The next generation of programmer
Ten years ago, I was teaching languages like Shell Scripting and C, but the requirement faded. As computers became steadily more powerful, standard applications were developed by a few, to be used by the many, rather than each of the many having specific code written for them. So now, I'm teaching languages ...
722I'm answering a job applicant
I get a lot of job applications emailed to me. I am aware that each and every person who writes in looking for employment is an individual, and I look at and answer each email individually out of respect for the time taken to send to us and out of respect that here's a human being who clearly needs ...
729Career development advice
This article is an answer to an Opentalk forum post asking for suggestions and advise as to how to move a career towards the consultancy / training side of programming, and asking for suggestions as to which technologies I would recommend. It's of general interest so I've posted it here where it will ...
