The story of our Georgian HQ and Edwardian Hotel
Resources from the web site of Well House Consultants on the subject of The story of our Georgian HQ and Edwardian Hotel. We provide open source training course
and business hotel accommodation
in Melksham, Wiltshire, England
Melksham was to be a Spa town to rival Bath and
Cheltenham, and three lodging houses were built on
the outskirts in 1813. To this day, they stand looking
out over the old road to Devizes. They've a long and
interesting history as you'll learn from some of the
links below. Well House Consultants has its HQ here.
Nearly 100 years later (in 1906), No 48, Spa Road was
built as an Edwardian Gentleman's home - just five
minutes walk from the town centre, yet in its own
3/4 acre of grounds. And this is Well House Consultants'
hotel and training centre.

What can I say? It's been a lovely day... I'm just waiting for the final checkins. We've had comings and goings all day - an event booked and deposit paid, rooms shown, a room changed over, deliveries of food, fruit and water, a run on orange juice in the cafe. A briefcase for lost property, and a successful ...

As part of our growing participation within the local community, we entered the front garden at our training centre into "Melksham in Bloom"... and we've just been notified that our garden has been awarded second place in the "most unusual garden" category and third in the prestigious and hard-fought ...

Seen, sometimes in abundance, in all parts of the British Isles, it is really a native of North Africa where it breeds in such extreme numbers that emigration is a necessity. Thistles are the principle food plant, but it's often seen on other plants such as Burdock, Mallow and Nettle.
|3847||The Accidental Hotelier|
Our guests often ask us why we're called "Well House Manor". And they ask why we're an IT training centre with some rather nice accommdation tied in with it, as they find it a rather unusual combination. Let me tell you the story.
Well House Consultants Ltd is a company I set up in 1995, to deliver ...
|118||History around you|
We live and work in an old Georgian house that's set incongruously just off the Melksham bypass on the outskirts of the town. This morning, I'm going to share with you an article I wrote for the newsletter that's circulated in the suburb that we border.
Have you even wondered about those tall old buildings ...

|2987||Memorial to a day in 1999|
Walking along the seafront in Plymouth last night, I was delighted to see, set in the footway, a memorial to the day that we completed the purchase of our home in Melksham. At that time, "404" was uninhabitable - the only water coming in through a lead pipe to a tap; which wasn't over a drain, no loos, ...
|2962||Well House Manor - the history of the hotel|
Well House Manor was built in 1906, as a home, on a 3/4 acre plot on what was then the outskirts of a much smaller Melksham. Originally, the staircase lead up from the right of the entrance door, and we believe that the ceiling was much higher, there being no room above.
Around 1920, the staircase ...

We're just half a dozen days into the new year, and already I can show you a contrast is pictures ... of the hotel and training centre, and of our home / HQ (that latter being a semi, and not the whole building!
It was predicted that last night would end with us a foot deep in snow - that turned out ...
|2548||Ten years ago, we moved to Melksham Spa|
"We must get in by Christmas". Thus it was, ten years ago today, that we formerly moved into No 404, The Spa, in Melksham.
Melksham's Spa houses were built in 1814 (or 1813 or 1815, depending on your source), for visitors coming to take the waters in two newly discovered springs. They're four story ...
|2350||Ten years in Melksham - looking forward to ten more.|
It's ten years to the day since we bought "404" - our home in Melksham Spa. An eerie takeover, with contracts being exchanged in the morning and we arrived to accept vacant possession just as the sky darked for the eclipse ... the great, tall Spa building in the half light, and the crows from the rookery ...
|2158||On the roof of a Melksham Spa House|
Over the weekend, we have been working (with far more skilled friends) to get our home / office at "404" linked to the hotel at "48" via a directional wifi setup. Not quite there yet due to ground clutter, but we will be. And it gave us the excuse to go up onto the roof at 404, which is 4 stories ...

It's that time of the year when Melksham's Spa Houses appear from behind the trees where they've been hiding all the year ...

|174||Contrast - the storm and the calm.|
There's a howling gale blowing outside our training room as I sit here this morning writing "The Horse's Mouth". Nothing new in that - indeed it seems that it's been pretty windy for a number of days now. Apart from the noise - the sound of raindrops lashing the windows in some of the stronger gusts ...

During their courses, our delegates are welcome to wander around the gardens at 404, The Spa.
I have to take my hat off to Nigel, who keeps all this in order; so much more than just a gardener. Indeed, last night Lisa picked up a "Melksham in Bloom" competition form and we mused as to whether we ...
