For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

2082Jmeter - a first test case
Would you like to see how your web site performs under load? I mentioned ApacheBench (ab) in a recent post, but you can also use a tool like Jmeter. And although Jmeter is written in and runs in Java, you can use it to look at the performance of other servers and network resources too. In famous ...

1377Load Balancing with Apache mod_jk (httpd/Tomcat)
A single instance of Apache httpd can handle a very large number of simple requests for files to be served ... but a single instance of Apache Tomcat can handle far fewer requests for applications to be run. After all, there's a big difference between just handing someone a piece of data and having ...

3018Tuning Apache httpd and Tomcat to work well together
If you're running Tomcat as your servlet / JSP container, you're more than likely to have it (or them - you may have multiple instances) running as application servers behind Apache httpd (the Http server) or behind a pair of Http servers. That just like having a team of people providing a service (let's ...

2060Database connection Pooling, SSL, and command line deployment - httpd and Tomcat
Yesterday (yes, that was a Saturday!) I was running a tailored Apache Tomcat training and consultancy day - a day on which I cover a lot of standard training material, but did so in relation to a particular application for the delegate(s). Most of what I covered was in our own material (which we can ...

1908Java CLASSPATH explained
When you run a Java program (be it though the java virtual machine or as a servlet within a web or application container such as Tomcat), it's only the main code (class) that's initially loaded. Any other code (classes) are loaded in dynamically as needed. Where are these classes loaded from? They're ...

1718Increasing Java Virtual Machine memory for Tomcat
Q. "How do I increase the memory that my Java Virtual Machine in Tomcat can use?" A question asked - not for the first time - by a delegate on todays's Deploying Apache httpd and Tomcat course. A. Set the JAVA_OPTS environment variable. Longer answer: If you're running on a Unix or Linux system, ...
