Background

Whether you're working local computers or on the internet, you'll be networked these days. Networking comprises a whole series of layers of protocols - from the physical to the packet transfer and up to the application specific. And the idea of 'the whole' is that you can send information from your computer to another that may be half a world away, know it will get there, and get the answer back. Truly remarkable how it works, when you consider it's like a postal system with lots of routers along the way that gets you an answer in milliseconds.
