King Canute was famous for sitting on the beach and instructing the tide not to rise and wet his feet. If you're new to this story, I should add that the King was a wise man who was illustrating to his subjects and servants that they should not falsely flatter him by telling him that 'even the sea will stop for you', and things like that. This picture is of Shaftesbury Abbey, just across the county line from us in Dorset, where King Canute eventually passed away.
