You would be surprised just how widely Perl is used; here's a picture taken during a course that we ran in the Middle East, for an organisation that's using Perl to keep track of its oil exploration data. This course felt very much like "old times" for me, as the very first program that I wrote for an employer was to keep records of magnetic tapes of seismic data in that employer's huge tape library. When I started, the records were themselves kept on a magnetic tape, which was updated from records in punched cards; it's amazing to see how over the years some things have changed, but other things such as the underlying application remain very much the same.
