On our public Perl courses, there's a 50 / 50 split between lectures and practicals. The basic course runs for 5 days, and introduces all the subjects that the majority of Perl users will need. Private courses are often shorter, as it's likely that a few of the topics needed on the more general course won't be necessary and that all the trainees will have a similar background ... thus allowing for a "faster start" course.
