Melksham Bridge

Melksham Bridge

The river Avon passes through Melksham, on its way from the Bristol channel through Bath and Bradford-on-Avon to Chippenham and its source near Malmesbury. The river has never been navigable at this point, but there are plans afoot to restore the Wilts and Berks canal from the south of Melksham, in an northerly and easterly direction via Swindon and Wantage to the river Thames at Abingdon.

Through Melksham itself, the old course of the canal has been built on, and it'll pass through the town along the course of the river before locking up into the old canal on the outskirts of the town.
