Brian Aker lectures at MySQL Swell

Brion Aker wrote the software behind "slashdot", using MySQL as the database. He was then recruited by MySQL and is now their director of development (I may have the job title slightly wrong). I attended a number of technical classes given by Brian, and came away with a much better understanding of performance tuning - Brian was talking about how they raised transaction rates from around 250 to 450 per second. Brian also covered replication and clustering in some detail, describing how additional servers can be used both as hot backups and to provide additional database throughput on systems on which most of the traffic is in "select"s - this applies to the majority of systems, the big exception being logging applications.
