The Library at Ephesus

The Library at Ephesus

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in Turkey was one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world - alas, all but one of these wonders have gone - but there's still agreat deal to see in many of the places such as Olympia and Ephesus; this is the Library at Ephesus. Built on a fault line, the city of Ephesus was destroyed by earthquakes several millenia ago, and became overgrown and was lost. Early in the last century, the ruins were re-discovered and some of them (less that 20%, it is believed) have been re-excavated - a fascinating day out during the "MySQL Swell" cruise that we attended in October 2004 to listen to the likes of Monty Widenius and David Axmark, co-founders of MySQL, talk about their database and company. This picture shows a view of the library at Ephesus, the frontage of which has been reconstructed using 80% of the original stonework to help give an idea of how it must have appeared in ancient times. Whilst libraries look very different these days, they're still very much around. We have over 500 books on Open Source and related topics on the shelves of our library at our "modern" training centre - a young building dating from 1814.
