Cherhill downs
![]()
A view from "Labour in Vain Hill" - yes, that's how it's labelled - which rises up from Calne
through Cherill onto the Marlborough Downs with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
If early canal planners had had their way, the Kennet and Avon canal would have cut along this
hillside as it rose in a series of locks from Calne and headed across towards Marlborough. In the
end, a more southerly route was chosen and the great flight of locks at Caen Hil, Devizes was
constructed instead. That was probably a wise decision, as there would have been severe water
supply problems on the high chalk plateau above Cherhill - but wouldn't it have made for a
magnificent scene?
