For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Why the error?

Why does this code

Code:
<?php
for ($k=0; $k<10; $k++) {
print ("This is row".$k+1."<br>");
}
?>

Produce this error:

Parse error: parse error in /Library/WebServer/live_html/oops.php4 on line 3

It's all to do with the two possible uses of the full stop ("period" if you're reading in American and not English).  It can be
a) A decimal point
b) A concatenation operator

In the example code, the 1. is taken as a decimal value of "one point nought" and then the open double quote, coming straight after a numeric constant, is a syntax error.

Easiest solution - bracket the $k+1:

Code:
<?php
for ($k=0; $k<10; $k++) {
print ("This is row".($k+1)."<br>");
}
?>

gives

This is row1
This is row2
This is row3
This is row4
This is row5
This is row6
This is row7
This is row8
This is row9
This is row10
