Tk Geometry strings Posted by admin (Graham Ellis), 12 May 2005 What does this mean?wm . -geometry 100x200+300-400 "Display the parent window 100 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall. Inset the left edge 300 pixels from the left of the screen, and the bottom edge 400 pixels up from the base of the screen" The geometry specifications in Tk (and X Windows) contain up to four pieces of information - width and height followed by two offsets. The offsets can be preceeded with a - sign to say that they're offsets from the right or bottom, or with a + sign to say that they're from the left or top. Remember that geometry strings are technically only hints or suggestions to the window manager and you're not guaranteed to get what you ask for. (Bit like life really!). If you want to be certain what you've been given, you should ask for the settings you want then use enquiry functions to see what you were able to actually secure.
