For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Formatting

Does anyone have some good examples of formatting ?

I understand the case where it's a simple "%s %s) %(value1,value2)

but I'm not so clear about taking a value from a file (which will come through as between 1 and 255) and constructing something like :
CHAR(01)

Notice the preceeding zero and also the lack of spaces between athe brackets and the '01'.

Obviously, after the value of 9, there's no problem.

Lastly, I'd like to easilly change an incoming date, such as 11/07/2007 to be encased in single quotes, '11/07/2007'.
Is there a very simple way of doing this ? (of course there is)

Here are some quick examples which I THINK answer you.  I'm just rushing past my keyboard; please excuse the shortness of the post and welcome.  But this should give you some clues

Code:
for k in range(0,120,7):
       print "'%02d'" %k,

print

info = "11/07/2007"

print "'"+info+"'"
print "'%s'" % info

In operation:

Code:
earth-wind-and-fire:$ python pp
'00' '07' '14' '21' '28' '35' '42' '49' '56' '63' '70' '77' '84' '91' '98' '105' '112' '119'
'11/07/2007'
'11/07/2007'
earth-wind-and-fire:$

I understand that the above did answer the question   - always good to get a confirmation feedback!
