For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Do you do Jython training?

Posted by admin (Graham Ellis), 29 September 2004
I've just had a request for Jython training ... not something that comes up very often so I thought I would write a little about Jython.

Python (with a P) is a superb OO scripting language.  Java is a good and very heavily used language for larger systems; it's compiled and portable in that a Java application can be run on any machine with an appropriate Java Runtime Environment installed but it doesn't have the easy "change the source and run" approach of Python.

Jython is an implementation of the Python language in Java.  So it runs in a Java Runtime Environment (with the portability that gives) and provides access to Java classes in a way that they can be quickly used / prototyped / tested.

Effective use of Jython requires a knowledge of both Java and Python, and also of the way they're linked.  I think we're unique in offering courses in both the foundation languages, but we're rarely called upon to teach them in combination using the Jython glue and we do not cover Jython on our public courses.   If you've just one trainee who requires to learn Jython, let us know and we can provide an extra session on top of our Python course - either an evening or a complete "Python Extra" day.  On private courses, we can include a module or two that introduce the Jython connection, and we can run practicals throughout the course using the Java based Python.
