For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Opentalks Search Engine?

Posted by MarkTChristy (MarkTChristy), 23 February 2005

I am trying to search for items in this forum, but the search engine seems to be quite obstinate. For instance, I looked at several posts and found that the word "cygwin" appears in many. So I search for 'cygwin' with many different options and it finds zero docs.

Why doesn't the search engine allow finds on message/text/body words. This would be most useful and reduce the number of posts... woudln't it

I searched for "cygwin" and got 24 results ....

The default search looks back just 7 days and that's a good default for a forum that's discussing (say) last Saturday's soccer match or Charles and Camilla, but perhaps not brilliant for Opentalk.  I changed my search to look back 999 days, and I'll see if there's a forum default I can change too now that it's been brought to my notice.

Oh - you might also want to try our main site search at http://www.wellho.net/net/aboutsearch.html which looks through the Opentalk archives and a lot of other pages (for example the "solution centre") too.

I see --- it also seems to be case sensative? Maybe   I'll try those settings and see what I can find!

Here is a good example of shout first and look second...

Thanks for your polite help!

Not case sensitive, but it is spelling sensitive and I know that "Cygwyn" has been mis-spelled here a number of times.  That will often be corrected in time - my fellow-administrator corrects spellings in my answer whenever she spots them, but we leave user posts / spellings well alone as a matter of policy unless a mis-spelling changes the meaning of the post.
