"No matter what's going on behind the scenes, the customer comes first". Grand theory - but what does that say in practice?
It says that a company such as ourselves should have sufficient robustness in place to carry on with scarcely a missed beat if one of us is off sick. Even if another one happ ....
In any substantial programming task, you'll want to store a whole series of values in some sort of table, so that you can process / reprocess / handle each of the elements in turn - and to do that, you'll use a variable construct that's called an "array", or a "list", a "tuple" or a "vector". (The ....
On this week's PHP course, one of the applications we're looking at is an image library - and that's given me an opportunity to go back through a few old snaps; I've just looked at a handful so far, but I couldn't resist uploading and sharing this one. I suspect I've never shared it before as it' ....
Web pages that really do something - rather than just feeding out identical information to all visitors - may have a lot of elements to them. Although you may be told "that's written in PHP", "that's Java" or "we use Ruby [on rails]", there are actually many more elements.

It's 07:30 in the morning and I've already made breakfast, changed a room over (two more to complete), and got more or less ready for a course (two systems to go yet). And that's after a very busy and long day yesterday.
We've always said that we should be robust enough to stand things happening ....
Please don't be "macho" with your regular expressions.
You can write a very long and complex pattern to match something like a postcode or email address, but if you do, it's be hard to test, difficult to debug, and awkard to maintain. And to add insult to injury, it will probably run slower that t ....
The other evening, I was asked if I had figures that compared the CO2 emissions of a train and a bus. Well - I had seen diagrams that showed that a train is significantly better per passenger mile, but I didn't have the figures. I do now:
Train - 60g per passenger km
Bus - 89g per passenger km
