SYNOPSIS
The finite element method has attracted a wide variety of theoreticians and practioners from various disciplines, including engineering, mathematics and computer science. The finite element textbooks currently available emphasize the basic theoretical aspects of the method, with applications being presented to demonstrate the essentially practical nature of the technique. However, there is an enormous gulf between the basic theory and a working computer code: it is now widely acknowledged that the programming involved in implementing finite elements is considerably more complicated than that of rival methods such as finite differences.
This book aims to correct the situation by describing in detail three specially written finite element programs. These should help the reader to take the difficult step from theory to program, thus enabling him to develop programs for his own particular applications in his own environment. The accent has been placed throughout on simplicity, ease of understanding and practicality. Only one type of element is used -- the parabolic isoparametric element.
