Travelled yesterday (so it's NOT Wiltshire), checked in to a hotel, training nearby today.

Yes. And no, 8 times. I did a Google search for "Venice of the North" to confirm that you meant Birmingham and I came up with claims from Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Glasgow on the first page. And a link to answers.com that listed 9 options ...
Aalborg, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Bruges, Bydgoszcz, Giethoorn, Hamburg, Manchester, St Petersburg, and Stockholm. It is, indeed, one of those!
